Highlights from STEP
Spring activities are in full swing at STEP! The program spaces STEP has settled into following the move from the Calhoun Center have been great places for new and deepening connections.
Mentors and students alike are quickly finding a home at STEP’s spring 2025 Jobs for Life semester. One student shared "I was surprised to see this is a workforce class but that it involves faith. I love God, and I didn't know there was a way to grow professionally while also growing my faith."

The farm at New Life Baptist Church, where the Victory Reading program meets, welcomed a pair of baby goats recently to the delight of the children in the area. One of the tutors observed that “the children seem much calmer here.”

Eight women recently participated in a Metamorphosis day trip. For one of the young ladies, it was her first time leaving Richmond. The bonding, fellowship, and time of prayer they shared was awesome, and the women continue to talk about how much they needed and enjoyed the trip.

Recently, STEP also hosted a lunch for the staff and teachers of G.W. Carver Elementary, where many children from the Victory Reading program are enrolled. Centered around the theme "You Matter," the event featured encouragement cards, door prizes, and delicious Lee's Chicken.

Former STOP, Inc. Project Discovery alumnae Annette Booker was recognized by the Greater Austin Black Chamber of Commerce as one of Austin's "Hidden Figures!" Annette is a Process Integration Engineer at Samsung Austin Semiconductor. She is graduate of Oscar F. Smith High School in Chesapeake and received her undergraduate degree at Norfolk State University, and her graduate degree in Electrical Engineering from Virginia Tech.
Luna Powell, a recent graduate of Warwick High School, joined Project Discovery during her freshman year. Ms. Powell states “Project Discovery has changed me as a person and expanded my horizons. I am genuinely grateful to Project Discovery because, without it, I would have likely lack the essential knowledge about higher education and not be able to meet all the delightful people in the program. Project Discovery helped to become more extroverted and exposed me to new experiences that have led to who I am now”.
