Community Action in Virginia
Community Action Agencies get most of their money from a
government program called the Community Services Block Grant, or CSBG for
short. The Virginia Department of Social Services’ Office of Economic
Opportunity helps manage the Community Action Partnership in Virginia.
Community action started 50 years ago in the United States
as part of a big effort called the War on Poverty. Today, more than 1,100 local
community action agencies across the country work to fight poverty and help
families become more independent. In Virginia, there are 31 of these agencies,
which are both private and public groups.
The main goal of community action is to help stop poverty
and make low-income families more able to take care of themselves. These
agencies offer many programs to fight poverty. They also work together with
businesses and other groups to create a strong support system for people who
need help the most in Virginia.
