Tri-County Presents Rock the Block Event

Tri-County Community Action Agency (TCCAA) brought the community together for a free “Come Rock the Block” event in June at Constitution Square to boost local families and organizations.

“We want to make sure that we give [citizens an idea] of what we do at Tri-County to support the community,” said Petrina Carter, president/CEO of TCCAA. “We wanted to do it in a fun way, and we’re excited.”

Rock the Block also functioned as a fund raiser for TCCAA, whose mission is to assist and represent the interests of low-income residents of Halifax, Mecklenburg, and Charlotte counties in Southside Virginia, as well as other surrounding counties like Brunswick and Lunenburg. Some of TCCAA’s partners such as the Virginia Department of Health, Anthem Health, and the South Boston Police Department had tents set up to provide more information about their work with the agency.

On the entertainment side, DrumLogic performed live music to entertain the crowd while the children had an opportunity for face painting and to play in the bounce house on the square.

In a highlight of a day, families gathered with their lawn chairs under the sun to cheer for the performance from the Head Start Program participants. Along with some of the TCCAA staff members, some 10 children sang an upbeat rendition of the alphabet song and Mary Had a Little Lamb.

Tri-County’s Head Start Program prepares children ages three-five years old for their education, while also offering various services such as health and nutrition, mental health services, and other family-oriented resources. Some of Tri-County’s other programs include Domestic Violence/ Sexual Assault, Weatherization, Healthy Families, Weatherization, Mentor Role/Model Program and more.

TCCAA staff members gave away free summer clothing for the children and adults of all ages, as well as shoes and backpacks for everyone in attendance.

Carter said, “We’re basically giving back. We’re coming out and making sure that the community is aware of what we do at Tri-County, and everybody’s going to leave with something. We do [charitable events] like this all year round.”

This is the first Rock the Block for Tri-County, and the agency hopes to make it a yearly event. For more information about TriCounty Community Action Agency, visit www.tricountyva.org or call (434) 575-7916.
