Free Tax Prep Programs Underway, Volunteers Needed

Many of Virginia’s Community Action Agencies across the state provide free tax preparation services for their clients. These services are provided through the IRS's Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) and Tax Counseling for the Elderly (TCE) programs. Services are provided to individuals who generally make $67,000 or less a year, have disabilities, and/or are limited English-speaking taxpayers. In addition to VITA, the TCE program offers free tax help, particularly for those who are 60 years of age and older, specializing in questions about pensions and retirement-related issues unique to seniors.

For more information on these programs or to volunteer with a Community Action Agencies to serve as tax preparers, contact the location near you below. All VITA/TCE volunteers who prepare returns must take and pass tax law training that meets or exceeds IRS standards. The following agencies are seeking volunteers for the 2025 tax season:

The Virginia Community Action Partnership and the Virginia Office of Economic Opportunity works together to provide all Virginia Community Action Agencies with the training and technical assistance needed to be successful. We aim to provide training for all levels of staff at an agency and board members.
